An ultrasound scan (sonogram) is a diagnostic
test that uses sound waves to create a picture of internal organs. It does not hurt. For most ultrasound tests, no preparation is needed.

But for some areas there is prep:

For abdomen (includes liver, gallbladder, spleen, pancreas):
• Do not eat gas-producing foods for at least 24 hours before your ultrasound.
• Do not eat or drink anything for six hours before your appointment. (Sips of water are allowed.)
• If you need to take any oral medication, you can do so with a small amount of water.

Pelvic: You must have a full bladder for the procedure. Finish drinking at least 32 ounces (one quart) of liquid at least 1 hour before the time scheduled for your ultrasound. Do not urinate before the test.

Preparing for the procedure

• Do not bring valuables with you on the day of your ultrasound. Keep your cash with you or leave it with family or friends. MD Anderson is not responsible for any lost valuables.
• Please arrive on time for your appointment. Plan on being in the exam area for up to 2 hours.
