Have you had a baby (or maybe a few babies), and you feel like your abs will never be the same? Or are you just thinking about getting pregnant, and you’re totally freaked out about what growing a baby will do to your perfectly flat belly?

I’ve been in both places… a bunch of times. And I have your solution!

When I met Brett Hoebel at a Fitness Magazine event a few weeks ago and got to talk to him about body image, training, and what true health really means, I knew my audience would fall in love with him. But then again, you’re probably already a fan of his after watching him on the 11th season of The Biggest Loser.

Then when he agreed to do a BexLife video with me, I knew I had to exploit his expertise in an area that SO MANY trainers just don’t have the first clue about – baby bellies.

And I’m not just talking about “how to lose your belly pooch” after having your first baby. I wanted him to show us how to train before getting pregnant to prevent future abdominal muscle issues, how to exercise safely during pregnancy to maintain strength, and which exercises are best after delivery – especially if you’ve experienced diastasis recti, the separation of the abdominal wall. Warren Turner says:

I just had my baby a month ago. I’m a plus size woman and I can’t see or
feel if I have diastasis recti. I don’t even know if I can do these
properly :(

Whitney Spence says:

Great video! However, I agree that you are NOT allowed to do plank (your
organs are putting pressure on the weak connective tissue)- Once you’re
diastasis is healed you can do it again, but not until you have only 1
finger of separation between your abs. The program I’m following (Tupler
Technique) says it usually takes up to 18 weeks to heal.

Amanda Bassin says:

you should not be doing plank if you have diastasis in preg

Apple Crumble says:

Wow, what a great informative video.

Thankyou.

Living My Someday says:

jennyisfat says:

Is it bad to start doing this exercise when you’re already 38 weeks? Will
it still help?

Candra Torrers says:

OMG! I haven’t had a baby recently (youngest is 18 months) but I have the
separated muscles ever since my 8 year old was born. I’ve been looking for
something to help with this. THANK YOU!

thelittleangie1 says:

Just want to check: should we start doing these before we get pregnant,
during and after?

Rebekah Borucki says:

Like we said, you should always check with your physician first. Your
trainer may or may not be doing what’s right for you, but your physician
will be able to determine what’s safe for you and your baby.

Klara Müller says:

Thank you very much for this video- something I really need right now!

Rebekah Borucki says:

I’m so glad you like it! Babies can really mess up a good belly 😉

Rebekah Borucki says:

Always consult your physician first! As a general rule of thumb, pregnancy
is NOT the time to try new things. Usually, in a healthy pregnancy, your
doctor will allow you to continue your usual exercise routine or level of
fitness activity.

jm2424 says:

Hi Bex! I’m not currently preggers & haven’t ever been…however, would u
suggest that we not ever do traditional crunches? Sticking to these
examples in the video & planks? Thx!

Bubulinamare says:

Thank you so much for sharing this video! how long would you say it takes
to repair the diastasis? and do you think side crunches could help ?
…thank you…

dax us says:

afgleila says:

Thank you for sharing this! Thank you for your time and dedication :-)

Rebekah Borucki says:

Diastasis recti is the separation in the abdominal wall. Brett tells us how
to detect if we have it in the beginning of the video. 😀

Katie Fraser says:

Do you know if doing a belly wave with my tummy makes it better or worse? I
can make my whole tummy do a wave and have no idea if this is helping my
core muscles.

Ivanna perez says:
